TEL AVIV: On March 14
th, the Israeli army and contractor Elbit unveiled a new precision-guided 120 mm mortar shell which will enter IDF service in months – and which, confidential sources say, will be demonstrated for the US Army by the end of the year.
The US could easily adopt the Israeli shell because it uses the same caliber of mortar, 120 mm, on special fire-support variants of its 8×8 Stryker (which may also get an Israeli anti-missile system) and the tracked Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV). What’s more, the US Army has been looking to upgrade its mortars for some time, including a field-test of a computerized 81 mm mortar called ADIM (Automated Direct/Indirect-fire Mortar) in Germany in 2018. It’s already developed some advanced aiming systems for existing mortars but Iron Sting goes further.

Self-propelled heavy mortar carriers are ubiquitous in modern mechanized armies. Mounted on light armored carriers and placed at the disposal of battalion commanders, such vehicles can deliver heavy and fast-responding indirect bombardments with 120-millimeter shells. When compared to self-propelled howitzers of similar caliber, mortars are lighter and require a smaller logistical train, but have significantly shorter range.
The United States Army mounts 120-millimeter mortars on wheeled Strykers (the M1129) and M113 tracked vehicles (designated the M1064). Russia fields its own 120-millimeter self-propelled vehicles, the 2S9 NONA.

She continues to compromise services to individual Alaskans in favor of businesses and out-of-state contractors. Procurement practices she oversees at the department have come under worrying scrutiny. Most recently, she is insisting on closing Division of Motor Vehicles offices in six locations around the state in order to pave the way for private vendors, who are likely to charge Alaskans as much as 10 times the fees for the same services.
